Web server
For many years after setting up my server I used it for a number of web sites. These included both personal sites and a site providing programme details for a theatre. Operating web sites on an ADSL link with a dynamic IP address is not ideal although it can operate well. The limited upload speed of ADSL is probably the biggest limiting factor.
I have always used Apache to operate the sites ad although it can take some time to get the first site right it is relatively easy once you know how.
I still operate a number of sites but I am now using a VPS from Slicehost for my important sites.
As of 2011 I have transferred all my sites to linode . There were a number of reasons for this move
- Price .. the cost of the services from slicehost haven't reduced over the 3 years I have been with them
- Future system .. Slicehost have now become part of rackspace and they are going to move everyone to the cloud with their daily pricing. That did not make any sense to me.
- Performance .. until I moved to linode I had always been happy with the performance of my slice. Now I have been using linode for a few weeks I realise what the performance should be.
