Server hardware

The server has gone through many upgrades over the years as the damands have changed. It currently consists of

  • ASRock AM2NF3-VSTA motherboard (chosen because of the 5 PCI slots)
  • AMD CPU AM2 5200+ x64 dual core
  • 2 GByte RAM
  • 2 x 200 GByte SATA Hard Disk
  • 1 x 200 GByte IDE Hard Disk
  • 2 x Hauppauge Nova-T DVB-T cards for MythTV
  • 1 x ethernet card as the "green" interface of the firewall. The "red" interface is the built in nic.
  • 1 x TDM400 for asterisk

I have been using linux for 15 years starting with Slackware but for the last 10years I have used Suse. The server is currently using OpenSuse 11.0 but will be upgraded to 11.2 when it comes out.

The server is located in my "server room" with its APC UPS. Apart from operating system upgrades I don't use a keyboard or monitor on the server. All the management is done over SSH links for my desktop machine.

The APC UPS connects to the server via a USB to serial adaptor to trigger automatic shutdown of the system if the mains power is missing for too long.
